From the last half of the 19th century until the First World War, a great deal of interest and great fascination arose for the Viking Age. This was, of course, reflected in contemporary art. Scandinavian painters were at the forefront, but many German, French and Russian artists also drew inspiration from this historical period of Nordic expansion and war spirit.
